Oil Addiction

Stupid economy. Awesome visual essay.

If we’re addicted to oil, our twelve-step program should begin with admitting that we have a problem. As the price of oil creeps higher, finding new energy sources is more important than ever. But the search for alternatives, combined with environmental disruptions, is putting new pressures on other essentials like food. There are some things that are going well in the world. Right now, the economy is not one of them.” - www.goodmagazine.com

We spent last week in Bend, Oregon enjoying friends, family, and our favorite bike team of all time - Team Type 1. There are a couple of reasons Lyn and I love TT1. First, in addition to riding to win, they’re also riding to raise awareness of a disease which I happen to own - type 1 diabetes. (Let’s hear it for the diabetics in the house) There are a few diabetics on the team and they are a huge inspiration to all “people with diabetes.” The second reason we root for TT1 is our good friend Chris Jones rides for the team. In addition to being a super nice guy and married to the smartest Yale graduate I know, Chris is a pro biker. Literally. Don’t be surprised if you find this post in the future because you googled “Chris Jones Tour de France.” There I said it.

The Friday night criterion through downtown Bend was incredible... hundreds of bikers careening around hair-pin corners at very un-safe speeds. I lucked out and got a front-curb seat on a sharp corner. This corner had a pothole that would periodically eat someone’s bike tire and send several unsuspecting racers skidding across the intersection leaving a trail of blood and skin on the road. Not pretty. I was glued to the spot so all of these photos are from the same angle. The riders were inches away at times. It was a rush.
